About Me

Hello! My name is Mrs. Murley. I am a graduate from Clarke University with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Elementary Education with a Reading and Coaching Endorsement. I have finished my student teaching experience at Resurrection Elementary in the kindergarten and third grade classroom. I have been teaching at St. Mary Immaculate Conception since 2009 in the Kindergarten classroom. I recently accepted a job working at Resurrection where I student taught in the Kindergarten classroom. I LOVE teaching kindergarten. It is a true passion of mine. I have a strong passion and eagerness to teach young children to become proficient and independent learners. I continue to strive to incorporate technology into the classroom. I believe technology gives students the building block to succeed in this technological driven society at a young age. We do so much in our classroom throughout the year with Ipads, Mimios, Clickers, and Flip Videos to develop our young learners. The students become successful, independent learners with all these devices and they enjoy learning with them.

Some projects and classroom bulletin boards we have been working on this month....

We are doing so great things in our classroom this November!

*We continue to have our "Special Readers." The students love listening to others, besides myself, read some of their favorite books! The lastest reader was my husband! He enjoyed every moment he was in the classroom!

We have also had police officers visit our classroom to talk about safety. Cpl. Tyler and Sara Jenaman talked to the students about stranger danger and safety signs! We really appreciate all the knowledge they have shared with us.

The students have also been working on getting to know the computer! Each student gets a computer and we are learning how to turn them on, open programs, and type!! We have one project complete and it's up on the website! We now will be working on GoogleDocs!! Each student will have their own account so we can share stories with teachers and hopefully our 3rd grade buddies!

One project the kindergarten kids completed was their letters to their senior companions. The kindergarteners used their 3rd grade buddies as helpers to make their notes extra special. We really appreciate all the help our 3rd grade buddies have done to make each kindergarten student feel at home at Resurrection! :)

We continue to learn new things each and every day. The next few projects coming up in kindergarten will be more computer/typing projects on GoogleDocs. We will begin our journal process and we start journaling every day in our new journal notebooks! We will also be continuing our science experiments and documenting all our predictions, experiments, and our findings!

We have been working really hard in kindergarten as we learn the about the writing process. We do a lot of writing projects in our classroom but this is the first writing project we wrote, typed, and emailed!! There will be many more to come! Enjoy this first topic of "For Thanksgiving I will..."

Remember, I didn't help the students on spelling. The only spelling I gave them was the topic-For Thanksgiving I will. I worked with each student on correct ending marks and some commas. These students are doing such a wonderful job sounding out words as they write them down. It's amazing to so much success!

With summer here I have some time to write about some of the fun things I do in my classroom that makes my Kindergarten classroom so special.
Individual spelling lists-
I give all the students individual spelling lists starting in early December before they leave for Christmas break. If the individual student doesn't know the alphabet that is what they are working on. If the individual student has mastered writing the alphabet they move onto a list of spelling words I have created. I start them off with 3-5 words. If they are successful they move up in the number of words they get each week. If they are not successful with the amount of words they have they move down to 2 or 3 words each week. You can really use whatever list of words you wish but I use a list that is grouped in word families.
I get my words from the Kindergarten Age 5 Spelling List. I think these lists are great. However, I will combine weeks or cut weeks in half for those students that need it. I have a sheet of paper that lists each students words for the week in a binder that helps me organize who has what words. If a student gets a word wrong they get that same word again the following week. They continue to get this word until they have mastered the word.
If you have any questions on the way I give my spelling tests please feel free to ask.
My past three years I have had 14 or fewer students and I administrated the tests myself. This upcoming year, I will have an associate in my classroom with 18+ students. The associate will help me administrate these tests on Friday because each student needs to be taken individually. After the students take the test, I correct them and try to get them to go home on Friday to be signed by their parents and returned. I hold on to these spelling tests until the end of the year to show the students their progress. The students always love seeing where they started (which is usually with the alphabet).

Alliterations

Five more days left of school. With school wrapping up so is some curriculum. We have completed our whole math book so now we are working on in-depth writing projects, clickers, and extra time reading! Friday we did a review with clickers and the students LOVED it! So, I will create another lesson with clickers again for tomorrow!
Today we did a fun writing project with iPads! We have enough iPads for everyone to have one, which makes things easier. Each student opened the camera app and took a picture of each student in the classroom. After they were finished they uploaded them to iDairy (full version-$1.99). With each upload the students can add a caption on the bottom. Well we are learning about alliterations with one of the Shared Reading books we are reading-ABC Look At Me!! So, each student wrote an alliteration for each student in their classroom!! It was an exciting process. Each student took pictures, uploaded pictures, worked on their typing skills, thought of alliterations, and had create classroom bonding! The below is one of the students work!

I would like to take some time and congratulate my students for a job well done on their May Crowning Mass. I have uploaded the Mass I used for KINDERGARTEN!! My students practiced these parts and were able to read them in church in front of the whole student body and community members!
I truly have an amazing class. Kindergarten students are just so full of life and so appreciative! I love stepping into my classroom each day to see students who want to work hard and continue learning!

Introduction:
Good morning!
The theme of this mass is to show our thanks for Mary the mother of Jesus. When God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus, she said “yes” to God. Mary always said yes to God.
Penitential Rite:
Jesus, through Mary your mother, you bring joy to our lives,
Lord have mercy.
Jesus, through Mary your mother, you teach us the meaning of sorrow.
Christ have mercy.
Jesus, through Mary your mother, you promise us your blessing forever,
Lord have mercy.

First Reading:
God said:
I have chosen you. Do not be afraid, I am with you. I will make you strong. You can hold my hand and I will help you.
The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm:
  1. Mary said, “My heart sings with thanks. God is great and good. Holy is his name.”
  2. God smiled on me. God looks kindly on all poor people.  Holy is his name.
  3. God is mighty and powerful. He has done great things for me. Holy is his name.
  4. God remembers his people. He has done marvelous deeds for me. Holy is his name.
Second Reading:
And the angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will over shadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be called Holy, the Son of God. For nothing will be impossible for God. Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”
The word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia-
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Alleluia-

General Intercession:
Our response will be, Lord hear our prayer.
  1. For all our religious and world leaders that they will do what God wants them to do, we pray.
  2. That we will be loving and obey our parents like Jesus did, we pray.
  3. That children will answer their call to serve God, we pray.
  4. That all mothers and grandmother, who are sick, may they find comfort, we pray.
  5. That all new mothers may have patience with their newborns, we pray.
  6. For all the members of our parish family, that God may bless them, we pray.
Thanksgiving Reflection:
Lovely Lady dressed in blue, teach me how to pray.
Jesus was just your little boy. Teach me what to say.
Did you lift him up sometimes, gently on your knee?
Did you sing to him the way mother does to me?
Did you hold his hand at night?
Did you ever try telling stories of the world?
Oh, and did he cry?
Do you really think he cares if I tell him things,
Little things that happen?
Do the angel’s wings make noise? Can he hear me when I speak low?
Does he understand me now? Tell me for you know.
Lovely Lady dressed in blue, teach me how to pray.
Jesus was just your little boy, and you know the way.

Sorry it has been so long since I have blogged about the students. With the end of the school year approaching fast and my resignation everything has been crazy!
The students have been working on planting different types of vegetables and flowers. All the flowers that are made are donated to SMIC for them to sell to the community. We use milk cartoons from lunch, cut the tops off, and fill them with dirt when we do the transplanting. This is a great activity for the students as they develop their fine motor skills with cutting the cardboard milk cartoons and not to mention all the learning that goes into the planting process.
The Community Plant Sale is Mothers Day Weekend Fri. May 11 2:00-6:00 Sat. May 12 5:00-7:00pm and Sun May 13th 10-12am

Teacher Appreciate Week is this week! TO ALL TEACHERS: YOU ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED AND ALL THAT YOU DO GOES TO A GREAT CAUSE!

The students have been working hard on learning how to tell time, add, and subtract in Math. This Everyday Math program is a great program and lets the students work hands-on as they learn.

The students just finished doing their last Mass of the year last week. The students did such a beautiful job with May Crowning. Each student had at least two if not three. These students read Mass parts that in years past I gave to 8th graders to read!! I am just ecstatic with the process all these students have make throughout the year in their reading. They are such great readings and LOVE doing it! We read all the shared reading books together!!

Chicks Last Day :(

We said good-bye to the chicks :( This year we did not have the turn out that we have in the past. We only had three chicks hatch out of 36 eggs. The three that did hatch one of them was very weak and didn't make it past one day. However, I think the students really enjoyed this experience. They learned so much about journaling and raising an egg into a chick. We used many different forms of information from past videos of the chicks and the internet to books and experience. The students LAST journal entry on the chicks is listed below.

Today we came to school and TWO chicks had hatched!! The students are so excited! We spent some time picking names for the chicks and the students came up with Fluffy and Stripes. We went through the process of teaching the chicks how to drink water. We had to dip each chick's head into the water. By the end of the day the chicks were eating and drinking on their own and the students felt like such great"parents" to these chicks!

We also spent some time letting each student hold the baby chicks.

What great weather we are getting here in Iowa!! I would love it if readers of this blog became "followers." There is a button on the right side of the blog that says "join this site" click and and join in on the fun!!!!

The Kindergarten students are continuing their chick process along with starting a plant unit. We just planted radishes, carrots, and onions. We use the Rootvue system which allows the students to watch the roots grow. There is a window the students can remove and see the roots below each plant. A really cool process.
The chick journal entries are really coming along great! Each day I continue to give the student key vocabulary words and they write about what happens. The children are really getting excited as we get closer to the hatching date. However, we are starting to see some blood rings which is a sign of the chicks not developing because of improper temperatures, improper disinfecting or holding eggs at temperatures above 80 degrees before incubation. Not all the eggs have blood rings so I sure it is not improper temperatures.

Here are the entries from yesterday.
